It’s Time For Retirement and the Closing of Kaizen Martial Arts
After more than 55 years in martial arts—beginning with Karate and Judo—and over 20 years dedicated to grappling through BJJ, Luta Livre, and SAW, Sensei Garry has made the decision to retire and officially close Kaizen Martial Arts Australia.
Our academy has proudly served the Wyndham Vale community for well over a decade, including nearly ten years operating from the IPC Health building. However, our lease concluded in December 2025, and IPC Health required the space for a new imaging centre to better serve the healthcare needs of the local community. Unfortunately, this meant the lease could not be practically renewed.
At 68 years of age, and with the unavoidable closure of the Wyndham Vale location, Sensei Garry has made the difficult but well-considered decision to retire and no longer operate an academy.
This is not the end of the story, though.
After nearly two decades of training, Sensei Garry’s daughter, Briarna, has decided to open her own specialised kids grappling academy in Werribee. Briarna has been teaching children for over 10 years, and this is truly her passion. Her new academy, Flow Grappling, will offer dedicated Kids Grappling programs for children from 5 years of age. Classes are carefully structured into specific age groups and belt levels to ensure focused, effective, and targeted training for every student.
Kids and parents alike absolutely love Head Coach Briarna’s approach, energy, and genuine care for her students.
As one chapter closes, another opens. Sensei Garry now has the opportunity to spend more time enjoying his passions—surfing and restoring cars—while Briarna steps forward to pursue her own path in martial arts, helping shape young lives through grappling.
We wish her every success, now and well into the future.
